“If you have good vocal technique, you will never injure your voice”
is the BIGGEST lie singers have been told.
Overuse Voice Injuries happen when there is an Imbalance between your Voice Use vs Voice Rest. If you don't get this balance right, if you sing Too Much, Don't Rest Enough, or Both, then it doesn't matter how great your technique is, you can still get Overuse Issues.
And these range from not sounding as good as usual, excessive muscle tension, increased effort to sing, to Vocal Fatigue and Voice Injuries such as vocal cysts, polyps, or nodules.
... 😕 You spent years learning good technique, practised hard to get good but you still randomly get pitchy and you don’t know why.
... 🎤 You always warm up thoroughly but some days it takes so much longer and it also takes more effort to sing.
... 👅 Your neck, jaw, tongue are always tight no matter how much you stretch and this messes with your tone and resonance.
... 💧You are diligent with your hydration, you nebulise and steam yet your voice doesn’t feel clear sometimes.
... 👩🏻⚕️ Your laryngologist said your vocal folds are healthy so it boggles your mind how your voice fatigues so soon sometimes.
Vocal technique is important but it alone CANNOT protect you from Overuse Voice Injuries.
Because Overuse Voice injuries are the results of an Imbalance between Voice Use vs Voice Rest leading to soft tissue changes.
Such Imbalances are the consequences of Classic Load Management errors and we physiotherapist see these all the time.
In the world of Physiotherapy, we have very effective, science-backed tools for load management.
In my 25 years as a physio, I’ve successfully used these tools to help all kinds of athletes Restore the balance between Use vs Rest, Overcome their overuse issues and Thrive.
This process is easy for me and I'm good at it.
When I learned that my fellow singers succumb to these same preventable errors, I took it as my duty to share these tools with my community!
